While you have probably found that in terms of their design and functionality, many of the arrays available do not vary too much from each other, while some surpass others' capabilities.
We strive to give you a good general overview of what to be aware of before buying in this guide.
In 6x8 speakers, what to look for?
The space available between each item is limited when shopping with a dictated dimension, but there are some manufacturers who implement clever design refinements to ensure that their speakers take advantage of the space more efficiently, work more efficiently, respond more accurately, and are better balanced in the crossover.
In some of those we discussed in today's reviews, this can be seen in the PlusOne cone technology model and the Vertical Connect Sound Technique used.
Just how you like your bass is one thing to remember, as it can be the hardest thing in a smaller space to do justice. It is probably better to go for a 2.1 setup in your car with a speaker dedicated to handling the low-end frequencies and freeing up your left and right to deal with the mids and highs if you listen to bass heavy genres.
In an arranged set-up, speakers typically perform much better. You may also want to take this one step further and invest in the subwoofer if you listen to especially low-frequency genres or if you want to experience the air movement and are not averse to growling distortion.
Your set-up, of course, is primarily determined by your ability to amplify the speaker. First of all, you need to understand how many channels you have and at what power and impedance each is capable of functioning. Some amplifiers have flexible channels that provide a little more wiggle space for the user to play with.
If you don't understand the requirements of your amplifiers, it may be better to look for a specialist to repair or replace your speakers. We suggest replacing each speaker with a model that fits the specs of the one removed if you want to go ahead on your own.
It's not too hard to replace a speaker and if you're willing to do a bit of searching, you can usually find an instructional video or two with specifics online, you can even find a video unique to the model you want to mount on your car itself. Even if you have a little know-how, it is not a big job, it is important to note that letting a professional do the job is recommended.
If you don't have too much experience, since they are already paired to manage the highs and lows together in tandem, you are probably best off going for a coaxial type car speaker, but some cars need component speakers, it really depends on your original set-up.
Component speakers provide more control over the location of the treble frequency, often opting for separate tweeters (high-frequency response speakers) closer to the driver on the dashboard itself. These days, the majority of tweeters will pivot, making the sound more specifically directional and allowing you to monitor where the generated audio is directed. For inspiration and details in its comprehensive buyer's guide, you may want to head on over to our 10 Best Part Speakers post.
The high frequencies normally hold the audio data, then the audio loses a lot of clarity and definition if they are not catered to properly, and it becomes difficult or muffled to hear. This is particularly true for spoken words, so it is important to have a strong mid-range and high answer to get the necessary meaning and avoid misunderstanding if you listen to radio programming or use Bluetooth for hands-free calls in your vehicle.
You need at least a 2-way classified package for full-range sound to better cover the highs and lows, this will usually be a woofer-tweeter pairing with the woofer preferably taking the mid-range in a 2.1 setup, but the audiophiles out there will probably be better off searching for a 3-way classified set to better suit their tastes. A 3-way class package, supported by a dedicated sub-cover, offers a much wider range and richer spatial audio.
As well as the materials used inside the parts, the standard of design and engineering is most important. Both speaker cones need to be rigid enough to withstand the motion, but flexible enough to sensitively pick up and respond to the processed signals. Usually they are of a stiffened paper or pulp composition, occasionally, for instance, this is more synthetic using polypropylene as you would have seen in some of our top ten picks.
The magnets must be of a good quality, and inside the magnetic fields, oversized voice coils respond better. The tweeters should be dome style and they will direct the sound better if there is a pivot installed, providing better definition.
Generally speaking, most dedicated car speakers on the market usually have a bit more to sell than your stock speakers and we see some surprisingly good items that cost very little to buy with a competitive market full of vendors seeking to undercut the next one.
Even the models sitting in the lower priced regions act as a great improvement, there has never been a better replacement for your car speakers than in the current economic environment.
We have outlined a fair few choices that each makes for good candidates and hopefully our buyer's guide will have helped to point you in a little further before you connect with your new speakers.
If you are inspired by the 6x8 options of today but need a circular choice, head over to our Top 10 Best Car Amplifiers post.
